A skill-based therapy program for children suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of traumatic experiences, such as witnessing violence or being in a natural or man-made disaster. It uses cbitw skill-building, early intervention approach that reduces depression and anxiety related to negative experiences.

These techniques and skills are learned through the use of drawings and through talking in both individual and group cbitz. In each session, a new set of skills is taught to children through the use of age-appropriate examples and games.

The CBITS program consists of ten one-hour group sessions with five to eight children, usually conducted once a week in a school or mental health or other office settings. The group sessions include exercises related to six cognitive-behavioural areas:. Additional between-session activities that each student does as homework help strengthen his or her skills and allow group members to apply those skills to real-life problems. In addition to the group manal, participants receive one to three individual sessions.
Furthermore, the CBITS program includes two parent-education sessions and one teacher-education session to help adults to assist children in solidifying the skills learned during the program.

These include anxiety reduction through relaxation; exposure to trauma cues and trauma memories; correction of maladaptive thoughts about the trauma, about the self, and about the world; and increasing sense of competence to handle anxiety and real-life problems.
In addition, focus on the trauma helps participants to create a coherent trauma narrative and process what happened, as well as to address grief.
The program also aims to build resilience for the future by enhancing parent and peer support, coping skills, and cognitive flexibility when confronted by stress.
